Homestead tree planting

The RHL project implements comprehensive plantation initiatives to establish natural barriers against the escalating threat of cyclones and coastal storms. By planting trees around homesteads, the project creates “green windbreakers” that provide immediate structural protection for vulnerable houses. This environmental strategy extends beyond individual homes to include massive roadside and school-based plantations, effectively transforming the coastal landscape into a greener, more resilient ecosystem.

To ensure both environmental and economic sustainability, the project selects high-yield and climate-hardy species such as coconut, guava, sapodilla, wood apple, betel nut and neem. These varieties serve a dual purpose: they anchor the soil and buffer wind speeds while providing households with nutritious fruit and marketable timber. Through this community-led approach, the RHL project is fostering a sustainable cycle of environmental conservation and livelihood support across the coastal belt.
